The Arete Project

The mission of the Arete Project is to imagine, found, and foster innovative educational programs designed to prepare young people for lives of thoughtful leadership and service to humanity.

Our purpose is to expand upon the educational models pioneered by L.L. Nunn in the early 1900s. Nunn’s organizations were designed to prepare servant leaders, and he structured his programs around three pillars: academics, labor, and self-governance. Our educational program, the Arete Seminar, gives college-aged women the unique opportunity to intensively engage in these areas during 8-week summer programs on an organic farm in near Burnsville, NC – about an hour outside Asheville.
